Emmet Hughes papers, 1940-1962 (bulk 1952-1957)

Consists of papers documenting the activities of Hughes as a journalist and speechwriter. Included are speech drafts, notes and reviews related to the various books and articles written by Hughes, as well as general correspondence. The drafts of Eisenhower speeches are from the 1952 and 1956 presidential campaigns as well as Eisenhower's first year in office. The speeches include editing comments and memoranda which reflect the views of Eisenhower and his administration. Books written by Hughes for which there are notes and reviews include his Princeton senior thesis on the Catholic church, politics in Spain during World War II, and several books on the American presidency. The articles by Hughes found in the collection cover post-war themes such as the return of political prisoners, the living conditions in the Soviet Union, and European politics.
